CHICAGO – If too many candy canes and cookies are making it difficult to battle the winter bulge, head over to The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center on the South Side of Chicago as they host the first annual ‘Kroc WinterFest’ on Sunday, January 20, and Monday, January 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 3,000 people are expected to attend this indoor, winter sports festival, which includes a full weekend of exciting activities for the entire family designed to help beat the winter blues and stay active and healthy.
“This event was inspired by the Mayor’s Sports Fest, which was held each Christmas holiday,” said Major David Harvey, Senior Kroc Administrator. “Due to budget cuts, the city is no longer able to offer the opportunity for kids and families. Martin Luther King Jr. was a force to bring all opportunities to all people and we have chosen the weekend that celebrates his birthday and legacy to bring a festival back to the city of Chicago that will encourage kids, parents and even grandparents to come out and play. Sports leagues, fitness classes, and arts education are hallmarks of the Kroc Center. We welcome families and individuals from Chicago to join us this weekend and experience everything that the Kroc Center has to
offer all year long.”
Sport demonstrations and clinics will be available for basketball, golf, soccer and baseball. Baseball clinics will be led by the Chicago White Sox ACE program and the Chicago State University Baseball Team. For the fitness buff at any age, certified fitness instructors will hold workshops in the state-of-the-art Sports Training and Recreation Center, including spin, step, line dancing, aerobics, Zumba, Thai Chi, Qui Gong, strength training and kickboxing, Senior Fit and Rail-Yard Fun for young people.
Don’t forget your bathing suit. Relax by the pool, take a swimming lesson or watch demonstrations in diving and aqua therapy in the one-of-a-kind Aquatic Center, the only indoor waterpark in the City of Chicago and the only waterpark on Chicago’s South Side.
For the fine arts lover in your family, the Academy of the Arts will hold a variety of breathtaking musical, dance and dramatic performances. Classes in visual arts will also be available to sample.
Families will also enjoy the ‘Taste of Kroc’, bounce houses, games and more. The event is free to Kroc Center members. Non-members will be charged a nominal fee of only $5 per family of four.
